The guy doing flips and tricks throughout most of MGS4 with minimal use of stealth because that's what his goddamn job is now. It's Metal Gear, because it focuses on the same universe and the use of the Metal Gears from the franchise, same with just about all of the Metal Gear games, regardless of whether they were stealth or not.

The name change, too, was to try and seperate it from the other games in the series, same with what the Metal Gear Ac!d franchise did (a fun series of games, but it was turn based strategy with stealth). Kojima is working on a Metal Gear game himself, he said he'd announce it either this year or next. In a recent video they showed on SpikeTV they do still have stealth elements in it, but with an action twist - think of it as the jump from Double Agent to Conviction for the Splinter Cell Franchise, but in this it makes much more sense because of the completely different characters. He considered cancelling it, but then outsourced the development to Platinum Games, who changed the concept to be something THEY were comfortable with - which is action games. They tried making it stealth-based, and when Kojima went to check on development like a year after the first trailer/announcement was shown they had made literally none - he talks about how they just couldn't come up with something that was functional AND fun to play.

This act would transform Raiden's big action-centric coming out party into their something standout and original for the studio. Still, I'm eager to see more of Rising Revengeance and witness if Platinum Games eventually breaks away from the original concept and into new gameplay territory.

I will admit that the repetitive act of slicing through slow moving objects never got old, but the mechanic could easily be overused over the course of a full game. This isn't a negative quality indicator by any means, but one that still leaves me with small reservations for the final game. It offers a chance for us to play as one of the powerful half-cyborg ninjas that have become synonymous with the PlayStation era of the series.Īs impressed as i am with the current state of Rising Revengeance, the demo I felt played more like a early tutorial rather than an actual level. Although Rising Revengenace deviates from the primarily stealth-focused world of Metal Gear, that's actually the point of the game. This amplified take on Kojima Productions original concept gives players access to an empowering set of abilities, something not typically found in a traditional Metal Gear title. While part of these moves felt slightly scripted, the game's new developer appeared to understand the importance using prompt-based QTE's as an option, rather than force the player into contrived action sequences that lose their intended affect - a gameplay issue prevalent in developer Team Ninja's most recent work, Ninja Gaiden III. A player could start up a combo, then quickly press two buttons when prompted to launch a soldier into the air, and then pursue their airborne target and finish them off with a slow motion slicing sequence. Having played Metal Gear Rising Revengeance - the game's new title which removed the word Solid - at E3 last week, I can tell you that the high caliber action and off-the-wall hijinks of the original trailer have been amplified significantly.ĭuring my E3 demo, Raiden moved quickly and often switched between fast attacks with his katana and deadly, enemy-splitting slow motion swings with ease. Late in 2011 we learned that Rising ran into problems during development, which prompted Kojima Productions to consider canceling the title before the deciding to outsource the project Platinum Games - a studio that specializes in the action genre, with unique titles like Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami under their belt. The first gameplay teaser for Metal Gear Solid Rising lasted only two minutes and twenty-nine seconds, but nearly a year and a half would pass before anyone would see the game again. After he performed a sweeping kick, everything on screen slowed down, which allowed Raiden an opportunity to hack away at a soldier's body in mid-air. The E3 2010 trailer showed the half-cyborg protagonist Raiden slice through brick-lined pillars, eventually causing a small shelter to collapse onto a group of soldiers. Ooking at the early trailers of Metal Gear Solid Rising, it's obvious developer Platinum Games inherited certain gameplay elements of Kojima production's design.
